Rising from the dense forests of Croatia’s Petrova Gora range, the Petrova Gora Monument is a striking modernist tribute to the World War II uprising of Partisans and Serbs against the Ustaše regime. Designed by sculptor Vojin Bakić, the structure is clad in gleaming stainless steel and once housed a museum, library, and event spaces within its futuristic form. Officially unveiled in 1981, it commemorated both the resistance movement and a wartime hospital that once operated on the mountain. However, the monument was severely damaged during the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s and has since been left in a state of decay. Today, its haunting shell stands as a solemn and powerful symbol of resilience, loss, and the layered complexities of history.
