This apotheopsy theater was one of the more intriguing features of the abandoned Ellis Island Immigration Hospital.
Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital was established in 1902 with 120 beds with the goal of shielding the American populace from the numerous illnesses afflicting its patients. Its capacity was increased by 275 and then by an additional 450 to handle the overwhelming volume of intakes. With eight corpse refrigerators, four laboratories, a giant autoclave that could sanitize entire mattresses, and a pathology theater where visiting physicians and surgeons could study the pathology of strange diseases, it was the most advanced hospital of its day. Even yet, the majority of the patients’ treatment was considered successful, and many of them went on to overcome their illnesses and become citizens of the United States. The hospital was closed in 1930 as the immigration regulations became xenophobic in the wake of World War I.
